Joe's Comments
Neil was not firing on all cylinders throughout the tournament, which is understandable considering the gruelling season that the WSA main tour puts the top players through. The old saying comes to mind with Neil winning the Kings Cup and that is 'FORM IS TEMPORARY but CLASS IS PERMANENT' and Neil sure is a 'CLASS ACT'.
Well the Kings crew have done it again ! What a fantastic tournament to be a part of,not only is it a great venue with 25 full size tables which catered well for the large entry of 128 players. The management headed by Mal Gilbert and his very competent and friendly crew sure know how to put on a very successful tournament, without forgetting the very capable tournament director in Terry Chapman, my hat is off to you all. Well done and please don't forget to send my an entry for next year's event.
A big thank you must also go to Tony Fridman for puting up the prize for a raffle of a portable tv/hi-fi system, which incidently my good friend Graeme McNeil won.

Joe's Comments
What a great relief to have won my first Oceania Billiards C/Ship,in the early 90's in the final, I led David Meredith from New Zealand (15 times NZ Billiards Champion)by 49 points with exactly 2min 16 secs to go and I lost by one point. I learnt a big lesson that day (never under estimate your opponent)for I thought when I missed my last shot that I had won ! It wasn't to be, David proceeded to get them at the top using the Postmans Knock method of scoring and when he hit the cueball when he was on 47 the bell sounded but unfortunately for me he potted the red off the spot. I don't think I will ever have such as close a game in my life. There was a slight consolation though and that was not only was David a fine billiards player he was also a great gentleman even though I only met him once I have much respect and admiration for him.

Joe's Comments
Well hello again 'Mr Consistent' What could we say about Glen, he always seems to be in the reckoning, especially of major events. There seems to be a pattern here; when Vinnie beats Glen, Vinnie wins the tournament and vice versa.
There is no doubt Glen is playing some of his best snooker in the twilight of his career,in turn I am sure it spurs on other players including myself in the over 40's bracket to keep practicing hard for our turn at the spoils.

Considering Neil is on his off season and probably not practicing to much at the moment and also the fact that he was playing on worn cloth apart from the table that the final was played on, I think he did very well and showed his class even though he had a near miss in the semi final. Well done Neil and I am sure I speak for all Aussie snooker players, have a great 2007-8 season on the WSA main tour, we are proud of you.

High Breaks
Steve Mifsud 118

Joe's Comments
The last two Classic's have seen two new names on the trophy Rudy Sulaeman 2005 and for this year James Mifsud, both who are from Melbourne. It was interesting to see on the winners honour list on the billiard room wall that only two New South Welshmen have won the Fred Osbourne in the last 20 years, those being Paul Balzer ( 3 times ) and Daniel Gimenez once. Melbourne players have had the majority of the spoils,so lets go NSW and see if one of us could add another NSW players name to the honours list for 2007.
In closing congratulations to James who plays in most of the tournaments in Australia and certainly deserved his victory if for nothing else for his sheer persistence and as the saying goes ( Persistence pays!)

Hassan Kerde 104, 102
Shawn Budd 100

Joe's Comments
Neil had two real scares on the way to winning the tournament, this being his 8th conscecutive Aust. ranking event. Firstly from the 'new kid on the block' in Hassan Kerde, who actually led Neil 2/1 in their quarter final match. In the final Glen had a nice 108 break and gave Neil a good tough match with both players making good sized breaks,Glen going for a three ball plant in the deciding frame which missed to see Neil making a nice 90 break to seal victory, well done Neil and good luck overseas for the 2006/7 season.

Great venue, great final with a break over 70 in every frame. Glen Wilkinson def Shawn Budd 4/0

Final
Glen Wilkinson def Paul Balzer 4/3

High Breaks
Glen Wilkinson 134

Joe's Comments
Well ! Glen proved once again that he is the most consistent player in NSW. He seemed to have plenty of energy in the semi's where he defeated Shawn 4/0 with two 50 plus breaks and a magnificent 134,although in the final I think both Glen and Paul were showing signs of fatigue with Glen outlasting his younger counter-part,even though Glen played one extra round on the final day. As for me I thought I played O.K. eventually going down to Shawn 3/1 in the quarters,in the first frame Shawn beat me on a respotted black and in the second frame I was 40 in front with two reds left only to see Shawn clear up with a great 41 clearance.

Joe's Comments
Well done surely goes to Roger for he's tenacity and fine play he displayed all weekend, illustrated in the fact that he defeated Glen Wilkinson the defending and six time consecutive champion and he also had the tournament high break of 107. I would like to thank Paul Balzer for his good sportsmanship, for when we played in the quarter finals during the 3rd frame while I was trailing two frames to nil I found that my cue tip was lifting on one end,I went over to Paul and I asked him if he would mind if we could adjourn the frame while I re-glued my tip and without hesitation he said go right ahead and take as long a time as you need, and lo and behold I ended up winning the match. Unfortunately for me,Roger was just to strong on the day, I was very proud to make the final and a big thank you must go to Club Marconi for giving us their great venue and and for sponsoring the event.

Well what can I say, '' Wilko your getting on my nerves'' this is the third final this year that I have lost to Glen. Hopefully I will turn it around in 2006.
Thanks to Denis Balderston for once again organising the tournament named in memory of his father. Ray was a good friend of mine and a regular golfing partner who unfortunately I could never seem to beat, unfortunately this is the second time I have lost in the final since Ray's passing in 2000. Ray being a good friend it really would have been good to of one his tournament atleast once, but as they say 'kay serah serah'

Joe's Comments
Congratulations to Stuart who toughed it out from the very first match of which I referreed when he played Vinnie Calabrese, after finding himself 2/1 down in that match he prevailed 3/2. I believe that win was the catylyst to mentally strenghten his resolve to go all the way ! It's amazing sometimes when you know you probably should of gone out in the first round what it can do to your focus for the rest of the tournament. As for me,Craig Mills got me 3/2,he received 15 start per frame but to his credit he made a 46 clearance in the last frame to come from a few points behind and win.

Serke Ivachev 107, 102

Joe's Comments
I am sure Glen said to himself this is definitely one that got away. In my opinion Glen could of led 5 frames to 1 in the final,he was playing the more solid snooker with Dene seemingly out of sorts. Dene led 7/6 with Glen making a nice break to level the the scores to 7 all. The scores were level on the final blue in the decider with Glen laying a tough snooker on Dene, having missed two attempts at the same snooker and with Glen 10 points in front,Glen decided to have a go at potting the blue instead of milking the foul and miss rule. Some people might say Glen being a gentleman didn't want to win that way, well personally I think the rule should be abolished because it can be so unfair at times but in saying that the rule has to be used to one's advantage for there will come a time in every player's life that the rule will cost them a match if not a tournament. Dene went on to clear the three remaining colours and win the 2005 Australian Open Snooker C/Ship on the final black.
P.S. I used to think Glen was one of the hardest players to beat on the Australian circuit, maybe he does have a chinck or two in his armour !

High Breaks
Steve Mifsud 121,111,104.
Glen Wilkinson 121.

Joe's Comments
It was good to see Steve in the winners circle again after a little while in the wilderness. Though I would of liked to have beaten him in the semi's,though in saying that Steve was just playing to well, making breaks of 74,104 and 81. Glen did well to reach the final making a 121 break against Aaron in the semi's. In the final Glen was three frames to two down then in the sixth frame he opened up with a 46 break only to see Steve eventually clear the colours and take the title also it was in the final that Steve equalled Glen's high break.
The Princes Cup is a very well run tournament with super table conditions and I congratulate Terry Chapman (tournament director) and all the other people involved in making it such an enjoyable event.

Joe's Comments
Two New South Welshmen contested this years Aust. Snooker C/Ship final, with Vinnie Calabrese winning this year we have the youngest ever winner at 17 years of age. While watching the final I had mixed feelings on who I prefered to win,for I am friends with both finalist's. It's great that Vinnie won for he has an enormous natural talent to pot balls though if Roger were to of won that would of been great as well for he would of been the oldest player to win ! Let's face it Vinnie would of had plenty of years to do it,as for Roger his hour glass to do it is running out.

Joe's Comments
Well what can I say ! Matthew Bolton is the best billiard player in Australia, and there is no doubt in my mind that if he continues to improve he will definitely give Bob Marshall's record of 21 Australian titles a shake.
Matthew averaged a world class 54 points per visit in the six hour final with Steve averaging a very commendable 27 with an average of 42 in the last two hour session of the final.

Well done to Michael Pearson in reaching his first final knocking out two past champions on the way. Also congratulations to Darren Martin in making his first competitive 200 break which actually lasted until the final until it was brutaly beaten by yours truly, hopefully Darren and I are still friends! Thanks also to Roger Carr for securing the venue and for his first class refereeing. In fact thanks to all the referees for a tremendous job.

Joe's Comments
Congratulations Glen on winning your 4th title for 2005. I was very proud of myself beating Rob James from the UK in the quarters and Steve Mifsud in the semi-s though very annoyed and embarassed in the way I played in the final. My formal excuse is that I am just not fit enough and that I completely ran out of energy. In saying that I don't want to take anything away from Glen's victory for Glen is a winner and he did all that he had to do to win, though from my point of view I didn't give him the true contest that a national ranking final deserves. Especially here at the Central coast where in my previous three finals I lost to Stan Gorski 5/4 then I beat Glen 5/2 in my next final then in 2003 I lost 5/4 to Neil Robertson. Also congratulations must go to Vinnie Calabrese for his best result to date in reaching the semi-finals of an Aust. ranking tournament and in defeating Shawn Budd the current Aust. Open Champion on the way.

Well what can I say,Neil has plainly gone to the next level! His break building is second to none,he made a magnificent 147 break in the second frame of the final,he also had a 139 in the semi-final against Rob James from the UK,who up to that stage had the highest break a 136 which he made against me in the quarter finals. Also congratulations must go to Matthew Bolton for making the final and for also taking some big scalps on the way.

Joe's Comments
The format of this tournament is 200up - the player receiving the handicap aims for 200; the player conceding the handicap aims for 200 plus the differential - i.e. My target in the final was 200 + 290 = 490.
Thanks very much to Jim McConnell and Bill Hart for organising and running the tournament.

Joe's Comments
Truly magnificent feat by Glen Wilkinson to win his sixth consecutive NSW State Snooker C/ship. Glen wasn't really firing on all cylinders in any of his matches but that just goes to show how solid a matchplayer he truly is,he is in the Steve Davis mould in my opinion, possibly not in consistency though definitely as a matchplayer. Shannon did well to make the final through some good matchplay of his own for he only had three breaks over forty though his table craft got him through,no doubt being Aust. under 21 Billiards Champion for the past three years has done him no harm in that area. As for my efforts I basically missed to many relatively easy balls against Shannon and I was duly punished as is what should happen when one doesn't take advantage of his opportunities. Also congratulations must go to Michael Lupton for his excellent high break of the tournament,a delightful 125 clearance.

Joe's Comments
Congratulations must go to Glen on his spirited fight back from being 4 frames to 1 down in the final, starting his comeback with the highest break of the tournament of 112.
I was very pleased with my game throughout the tournament with not dropping a frame until the second frame of the final. Glen had a 51 break in the first frame and I was thinking to myself that this would be the first frame that I would of lost in the tournament so far, though in two subsequent scoring visits I managed win it. Then to my dismay Glen won the second frame in similar fashion after I had compiled a 55 break only to miss an easy third last red. In the next three frames I compiled breaks of 46,64,57 to go to a 'three up with four to play' situation. Then came the 'Wilkinson Tsounami' well, that's what it felt like. Glen in the next four frames compiled breaks of 112,69,44,47 to run out a 5/4 winner. It was a privilege for me to play in a final of such high quality.
Also mention must go to Marwin Masri and the Punchbowl RSL snooker committee for putting on the tournament, thanks guys. Joe.

Joe's Comments
Congratulations Shawn, you truly are a talented player. I was very proud in playing Shawn in the quarter final,I remember saying to him if it wasn't for his ability to pot tremendous balls into the middle pockets at all angles and speeds I might of got him, truly he was potting balls with power into middle pockets from incredible angles, shots that unfortunately I can only dream about. In the semi-final Shawn had another close one with James Mifsud the talented left handed player from Melbourne and brother of the great Steve Mifsud ( 2002 IBSF World Snooker Champion )
In the final Shawn played gritty snooker to defeat last year's champion Aaron Mahoney 8/4.
