Notable Performances
- Thirteen year old Vinnie Calabrese, although beaten 4-3 by Tony Kook
(the eventual runner-up), definitely has a bright future ahead of him for
one so young.
- Darryl Walsh played very well to defeat Aaron Josephson 4-3 in the
first round - making a break of 72 in the final frame to clinch the match.
- It was good to see Gary Mares back on the scene, although he lost his
first match to Harry Nenadich.
- Ron Atkins, the 3 time Australian champion and runner-up to Jimmy White
in the 1980 World Title played in Tasmania, was here in an administrative
role and decided to have a run in the tournament. He was beaten by James
Mifsud, brother of the eventual winner, Steve Mifsud.
- Stuart Lawler, the 1998 champion, was knocked out of the 2nd round by
Tony Kook 4-2 - Tony went on to make the final and finished runner-up.
- Up and coming player Chris Calabrese defeated Glen Wilkinson (the 1998
Australian Open runner-up and winner of the 1999 South Pacific
championship) 4-1 in the round of 16.
- The biggest upset of the tournament was Danny Love defeating Shawn Budd
4-3 in the round of 16.
- In the quarter finals, Tony Kook continued on his winning ways, defeating
Roger Farebrother 5-4.
- Chris Calabrese was unlucky to lose 5-3 to Paul Bunt, with Paul making
some big breaks to win cruicial frames.
- Steve Mifsud scored the highest break of the tournament of 141 in his
quarter final match against Joe Minici, which was also his personal best
in competition. The break was a total clearance from Steve's first shot
in the frame.
Joe's Comments
Congratulations to Steve, it was an emphatic victory and very well deserved
- your new cue (only two months old) must really agree with you. This is
Steve's second Australian Open title, which have both been won at Mt
Pritchard. Steve, all the best for the future, you are a great ambassador
for the game.
As for yours truly, I felt I had a good tournament, winning my first
three games 4-0. I then had a front-row seat to watch Steve's 141 break,
which was quite a courageous break and a pleasure to witness.
It was great to see referees from all over Australia at the tournament
and especially the international referee, Harold Silver - affectionately
known as 'Hi-Ho'...as in 'Hi-Ho Silver'. A big thanks to Bill Orr
(tournament director), and Bill Hart (the referee's director) for a very
well run event.
