Joe's Comments Although seeded one for the tournament, I just didn't adjust to the conditions well enough on the Sunday - despite having breaks of 70,58,47,32 and 31 in my two matches on Saturday. Congratulations on a tenacious effort to Michael for finally winning the Rooty Hill Masters - his previous best result was runner-up to Quinten Hann. I was never in front on frames in the final until I potted the last black to win 5-4 - after Neil potted a super blue and pink and got good position on the black I was saying to myself that I was very pleased with my performance regardless of being runner-up. Then an extraordinary thing happened - Neil asked the referee to clean the white and black without apparent need. I feel sure this put extra pressure on the shot for him, especially on the match ball. Ironically, the black was identical (although on the opposite side of the table) to the one Steve Davis missed in 1985 to lose the world title - coincidentally, Neil has very similar features to a young Steve Davis. Who said 40 year olds don't win Australian ranking snooker tournaments! The conditions were not conducive to great snooker, so the matches were hard fought all weekend. I lost the final of this tournament in 1997 to Stan Gorski 5-4 after leading throughout, so I was glad to get up for a win this time.
